I need it, why can’t I let myself have it?

The Must Have/Can’t Have Character ‘must have’ something—say, a solution to her problems. She appears actively to seek it and might ask anyone she meets for solutions. Or her asking for help will seem implicit in her constant complaining. However, when offered a range of feasible solutions, she ‘can’t have’ any of them. She can’t make them work or see them as relevant or her style. Nor has she been able to find any solutions herself—the problem is too huge and would take far more energy than she’s got to do anything about it, which is also why she can’t accept solutions from anyone else. Because it has defeated her, she feels no-one else understands the complexity of the whole problem, either.

Using the block ‘Yes, but’, she would rather have her problem than change anything. Her inability to take responsibility for her situation condemns her to becoming her own worst problem. She probably gets quite a lot of attention by this unconscious mechanism, especially from Compulsive Helpers who are drawn like magnets to hopeless causes.
